Sticks
In the summer of 2016 I began to explore the expressive possibilities of working with open structures constructed of sticks and paper. Working this way is fluid and improvisatory.
Most of the sticks were collected on hikes around Los Angeles, including the Hahamongna Watershed Park in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains next to JPL.
I use strips of washi paper, either stained with acrylic paint or left natural, to wrap the sticks and add color, using matte medium to add strength to the joints. The planar shapes in some of the sculptures are washi paper sandwiched over forms made of floral wire or basket weaving reed.
