In the last couple years, I took up throwing on the wheel as a regular practice. I found an essential form that felt right for me: a ribbed vessel that expands upwards and outwards in rings. It reminds me of soundwaves (maybe gravity waves?) made physical. I’ve been joining these vessels into conjoined pots. The energy between multiples of these forms merge in complex geometries interests me most in these pieces… an energy that might stand in for the gravity between binary stars or lovers, or ripples of stones dropped in a pond. These are the kinds of metaphors I think about when I’m making these functional planters, this is the energy I’m trying to embed in the work, the characteristics that make the work look complete or focused and my own when it is working right.
